Background of the Study

Depression and anxiety are significant public health concerns, particularly among young people who are navigating critical developmental stages. These mental health disorders are often characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, fear, and worry, which can severely impair daily functioning (WHO, 2024). Youth populations are particularly vulnerable due to socio-economic pressures, academic demands, and evolving societal expectations. In Benue State, Nigeria, youth face unique challenges arising from unemployment, political instability, and communal violence, all of which contribute to heightened levels of psychological distress.

Benue State has witnessed an alarming rise in mental health issues among its youth population over the past decade. Socio-economic disparities, coupled with inadequate access to mental health care, exacerbate the problem. Moreover, stigmatization of mental health conditions within the community discourages young people from seeking help, leading to prolonged suffering and reduced productivity. Despite these challenges, there is limited empirical research on the prevalence and determinants of depression and anxiety among youth in the region. This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating the extent and impact of these mental health disorders in Benue State.

Statement of the Problem

The increasing prevalence of depression and anxiety among youth in Benue State poses a significant threat to the region's socio-economic development. Many young people in the state face barriers to education and employment, compounding their risk of developing mental health disorders. However, mental health care services remain underdeveloped, with limited availability of trained professionals and facilities. This has resulted in a large proportion of affected youth going untreated, perpetuating cycles of psychological distress and social exclusion.

Furthermore, cultural misconceptions and stigmatization around mental illness inhibit help-seeking behaviors, leaving many young individuals to endure their struggles in silence. The lack of targeted mental health policies and interventions further aggravates the issue. This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of depression and anxiety among youth in Benue State, offering evidence-based recommendations for improving mental health care access and outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To determine the prevalence of depression and anxiety among youth in Benue State.
  2. To identify the socio-economic and cultural factors contributing to these mental health conditions.
  3. To evaluate the accessibility and effectiveness of mental health care services for youth in the region.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of depression and anxiety among youth in Benue State?
  2. What factors contribute to the development of these mental health conditions?
  3. How effective are the existing mental health care services in addressing youth depression and anxiety?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Depression and anxiety are significantly prevalent among youth in Benue State.
  2. Socio-economic pressures and cultural stigmatization are major contributors to these mental health conditions.
  3. Existing mental health care services are inadequate in addressing the needs of affected youth.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on youth aged 15–30 years residing in Benue State, exploring the prevalence, causes, and impacts of depression and anxiety. The analysis also examines the adequacy of mental health care services in the region. Limitations may include reluctance among respondents to disclose mental health challenges due to stigma and difficulty in accessing remote areas for data collection.
